The Artist (Film Review)

Aug 20, 2012
George Valentin is a famous, cheerful silent film actor. After the premiere of his latest picture, 'The Russian Affair', a fan named Peppy Miller accidentally bumps in the actor and caught the attention of the press. Peppy Miller auditioned for a role as a dancer in Valentin's upcoming movie, 'A German Affair' and also stars in a couple of pictures. When Kinograph Studios decided to stop making silent films and move on with the use of talkies in movies, George Valentin and Peppy Miller's life turns upside down. Peppy Miller rises as a new star in Kinograph Studios while Valentin falls and bankrupt. But Peppy doesn't forget to care for his idol George Valentin.
I have never been a fan of the black-and-white format in movies. I always think that it's old-fashioned and makes a movie less colorful than it is. But The Artist caught my attention because of the positive reviews and ratings critics has given to it. It also won 4 Academy Awards if i'm not mistaken. Surprisingly, it was really good.

The Artist is a really fun movie to watch. During the first 5 minutes of the movie, it strucks me and during the course of the movie, I laugh so hard in some scenes. It is intriguing sometimes, but if you are a movie buff like me, you will surely gonna love this film.

Just like Martin Scorsese's Hugo, this movie plays a huge role and shows a lot of how movies are made way back ago. Jean Judardin is so good portraying George Valentin. Without using words, he still tries to make the character surreal and emotional. Thus, the scene where he burns his films shows that he can dare to act, he truly deserves that Best Actor award in Oscars. There is also a lot of cameos and supporting acts for some actors including Malcolm McDowell, John Goodman, James Cromwell and Ken Davitian.

The performances were great. Score is so good. Cinematography is great. The Artist was now my 3rd favorite film of 2012 (It was released in the Philippines last June).

The Artist is a delightful film for all ages. If you're an avid moviegoer, this film will never fail to impress you.

The geek rates it 9.4/10. I will be back for my reviews of The Expendables 2 and Total Recall.

For now, why not check the trailer for The Artist:
