Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (Film Review)

Jan 19, 2013
There came a time where Jeremy Renner make crappy movies. And this is where it all began..
'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' is a dark, twisted spin of the classic fairy tale starring Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen and is directed by Tommy Wirkola. In the film, after being abducted by a dark witch and killed it, siblings Hansel and Gretel grew up becoming bounty hunters who track and kill witches. But as the fabled Blood moon rises, Hansel and Gretel faces a much more bigger threat that holds a secret in their past.

So, I've never been a fan of those dark spins on fairy tales. I never liked it especially the last attempt Hollywood made namely the "Snow White and the Huntsman". The reason why I hated it is because it's too mainstream or it looks like a cashgrab. With the latest movie "HAG: Witch Hunters", it looks cheesy and cliched judging from the trailer itself. So the question is, "Is Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters worth your money?".

"HAG: WH" is a terrible movie. I'm sorry if most of you enjoyed it, but it's another mindless horror/ action film that tries to impress its audiences. This movie has the worst performance Jeremy Renner has given. I liked him as an actor but he proves himself wrong. From the standpoint of seeing him in his first scene in the film, it really looks like he was forced to do it. Same thing goes to Gemma Arterton.

Gemma Arterton was a great actress. But she just continue doing shitty movies back-to-back. But she was pretty hot though in this movie. Move over to the action scenes in the film. The action sequences was as usual very stylized. You know that "Ninja Assassin" fight sequences where blood splatters everywhere, that's what you get here. The 3D also didn't live up to my expectations, it's just another plain, flat post-conversion 3D.

Anyways, this film didn't impress or wow me in all aspects. I enjoyed though some scenes but that doesn't mean I liked it, it was so bad. I even heard they were making a franchise out of this film, I have no comment about that.

'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' is another mindless action movie that never works on every aspect. It looks very forced and its all-around cheese-fest.

The geek rates it 5.3/10. I'll give credit for the visuals of the film. That is all.

'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' is PG-13 and will be showing in 3D, 2D and IMAX January 23.

Special thanks goes out to the guys of Solar UI-P for inviting me to the press screening at IMAX SM North Edsa!
