'The Last Pinoy Action King' follows screen legend Rudy "Daboy" Fernandez, whose golden days in the '80s brought the staggering rise of action films in the Philippine box-office alongside Fernando Poe, Jr. But beneath the success of the actor lies a larger-than-life story of a man living only in his principles to help and bring joy to the people around him.

This is a lovely tribute to Daboy. Directors Andrew Leavold and Daniel Palisa managed to garner interviews of his family members and friends in the industry whose love and passion on the actor was evident in the entire film.

I was waiting to see the filmmakers present the negative side of Rudy Fernandez in the film but I didn't get any. The documentary is a commemoration of his life and death after all, and it will be impossible for this film to not make you love the guy more. His onscreen personality as a bad-boy is the entire opposite off-screen: a loving and humble family man and friend to everyone close to him.

His term as a head of the Actors Guild allows the film to expand to talk about the history of Philippine cinema, and how Rudy Fernandez made big contributions to the local business that shaped where it was today. Leavold also do a familiar approach to his previous documentary The Search For Weng Weng, creating a rounder look to the overall local film history.

The final moments of 'The Last Pinoy Action King' is a painful watch. We all know where the film will head after all, but it's impossible to not be moved on everyone's statements reminiscing his final moments before his death in 2008. The Philippine action genre dies with Rudy Fernandez, and I can't see someone following his footsteps because there will always be one "Daboy", and his life/ works will forever be remembered.

The geek rates it 9/10!

'The Last Pinoy Action King' is now having its limited run at Cinema '76 in San Juan as part of their Rudy Fernandez retrospective line-up.
