QCinema International FIlm Festival 2019: Everything we know (so far)

Philippine film festival season is upon us! QCinema International Film Festival will have its 7th edition in a matter of months from now (as of writing, July 8), and although more announcements are yet to be released, we have a slew of meaty news to share with you.

The festival run for QCinema International Film Festival 2019

This year's edition of QCinema will be happening on October 13 to 22, 2019.

For the past six years, QCinema has been giving grants for its main competition titles through the Circle Competition. Now, it is moving to the Asian Next Wave Competition, where the selected titles will be in head-to-head with other entries from all over Asia. 

The selected three (3) Filipino entries are:

• 'Kaaway sa Sulod' by Arnel Barbarona

Two women, an army officer and a guerrilla fighter, cross paths in a mission and find out they are mirror images of each other. They will uncover a dark past that unites them more in the midst of conflict.

• 'Babae at Baril' by Rae Red

A department store saleslady has had enough of being an underdog. One night, she discovers a peculiar-looking gun right on her doorstep. Her life drastically changes as she discovers how much power owning a gun can give her.

• 'Cleaners' by Glenn Barit 

Students from a high school cleaners group each dealing with different pressures of being clean and pure while also slowly discovering how the world is dirty and superficial, to begin with.

The accepted entries will compete for the Pylon Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay and Best Artistic Achievement, as well as NETPAC Jury Prize and Gender Sensitivity.

QCinema will once again screen short films they've funded this year.

A 1950s mestiza star is trapped inside a television that fell from the sky, dreaming up of a romantic romp on the rice terraces, with a Bontok Igorot man who does not know how to kiss.

The competition grantees this year has been given a production grant of P200,000 while retaining exclusive rights to their films. These filmmakers will compete for the Audience Choice Award for Short Film, QC Shorts Jury Prize, and Best Short Film.

These documentaries include For My Alien Friend by Jet Leyco, A is for Agustin by Grace Pimentel Simbulan, and Spring by the Sea by Aleia Garcia.

• 'For My Alien Friend' by Jet Leyco 

This documentary is about Filipino men and women, and other living things passing through similar objects, familiar spaces, non-linear time, and dreams alike – all connected from the lens and experience of a stranger, an Alien whose language is disconnected and demands an interaction from the viewer to reconnect these stories to find their own meaning.

• 'A is for Agustin' by Grace Pimentel 

41-year old Agustin Tiburcio, an illiterate indigenous man in a remote mountainous region in northern Philippines who wants to learn his ABCs. He gets fed up with being exploited by his employers and decides to go to school with the goal of making a better life for himself and his family.

• 'Spring by the Sea' by Aleia Garcia

In this documentary, Garcia shows an alternating Philippines and Saudi Arabia as her home and uses personal home videos and present footage to tell the story of her family.

The grantees for the documentary films have been given a post-production grant of P500,000 each while retaining exclusive rights to their films
