New characters sweep into the vast world, as the adventure sets off with even more stunning visuals and thrilling action sequences.

Dune: Part Two continues the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), now away from his home and propelled by fate into an intergalactic power struggle. As he journeys with the Fremen people, he tries to gain their confidence with the support of Chani (Zendaya) and Stilgar (Javier Bardem). To prepare for their continuous revolt against the tyrannical Harkonnens, and to truly be a part of the Fremen, Paul takes one of their most dangerous trials.

Watch as Paul Atreides rides a sandworm for the first time:

The Harkonnens carry on pillaging Arrakis for spice, which the Fremen have been violently opposing. As tensions escalate and the Harkonnens gather forces, the Baron (Stellan Skarsgård) lets one of his more vicious and bloodthirsty nephews, Feyd-Rautha (Austin Butler) take part in the war. Them and the other royal families serve the Emperor (Christopher Walken), previously unseen in 2021’s Dune. In Dune: Part Two we are taken to his realm, and that of his daughter, Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh).

The themes of the film are both timeless and timely, as love and loyalty, humanity versus nature, take center stage in Dune: Part Two. On one side are the Fremen who have adapted to their native land of the desert, surviving by being one with it and learning to live alongside its harsh nature. On the other lie the Harkonnens who’ve epitomized corruption and greed. Paul Atreides is at the center of the struggle, battling the people that eradicated his clan while fighting against the destiny that was handed to him.

Watch as the journey reaches greater heights as Dune: Part Two arrives in Philippine cinemas on February 28.
Matthew Escosiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805192838835673543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162367966255541501.post-88499891815016290702024-01-23T18:11:00.000-08:002024-01-23T18:12:13.683-08:00First Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival introduces finalist directors
Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival, the much-awaited event that is set to hail a new generation of outstanding Filipino films, officially introduced the recipients of its coveted film grants during a press conference held at the Artson Events Place, Quezon City.

Among the full-length film finalists named during the press conference were Kurt Soberano, a newcomer with his entry, "Under the Piaya Moon," and Eugene Torres with "One Day League: Dead Mother, Dead All". Following meticulous evaluation of the outstanding shortlisted entries, the six finalists, consisting of four seasoned and two aspiring directors, will move on to the final stage of the competition: film production.

Vincent Co, President of Puregold, obviously thrilled about the development, stated, "The vision for Puregold’s CinePanalo Festival is to establish it as a platform for local filmmakers to showcase their talent. I am especially delighted to see two up-and-coming directors earning well-deserved spots in the roster, highlighting the panalo spirit and inclusivity of this competition."

Making it to the prestigious list of finalists is Bacolod-based director and “newbie” in the industry Kurt Soberano, with “Under a Piaya Moon”. An actor, director, and writer, Soberano has so far crafted short films such as "Golden Bells" (2022), "Sa Balay ni Papang" (2021), and "Azucar" (2019).

Also earning a coveted slot for the grant is award-winning filmmaker, writer, and actress Sigrid Bernardo, with “Pushcart Tales”. Known for her outstanding work in acclaimed films such as "Anita's Last Cha-Cha" (2013), "Kita Kita" (2017), and "UnTrue" (2019), Bernardo has received awards and nominations from several local and international film festivals.

Another accomplished director and actor, Raynier Brizuela, makes it as a finalist in Puregold CinePanalo’s official full-length film category with her entry, “Boys at the Back”. He is known for his contributions to films like "Video City: Be Kind, Please Rewind" (2023), "Mang Jose" (2021), and "Asuang" (2018), and his nominations from FAMAS and Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival.

Puregold CinePanalo also awarded a film grant to Joel Ferrer for his entry, “Road to Happy”. An actor, director, and writer, Ferrer boasts an extensive portfolio of 15 films and series, including "Hello World" (2013), "Baka Siguro Yata" (2015), and "Woke Up Like This" (2017). He has also received accolades from local and international film festivals.

Rounding up the initial list of five finalists is Carlo Obispo, with “A Lab Story”. This expanded the final count of full-length category finalists to six slots.

The talented Eugene Torres, an actor, producer, and director, is noted for his short film "Yujin" (2017) and contributions to films such as "Deleter" (2022) and "Gatilyo" (2019).

Each of the six finalists will receive a grant of P2,500,000 to aid in the production costs of their full-length films. This was made possible through the collaboration with Scanline VFX, known for their work on major Hollywood productions.

“To what extent CGI-characters can be shown close-up depends on the distance from the camera, whether there’s dialogue, and the facial expression,” said visual effects director Tomofumi Akahane. “With Scanline VFX on board, we were able to reach higher than any other Japanese title and achieve a quality where the average viewer won’t be able to tell that CGI is actually CGI.”

The team made use of the latest performance capture technology, with 170 cameras filming the actors simultaneously in 360 degrees. This allows director Sho Tsukikawa to choose the best angle afterward as if moving a single camera, resulting in realistic CG character assets that seamlessly interact with the live-action elements.

Recreating battles between humans and demons

As the setting of Yu Yu Hakusho includes the Human World, the Demon World and the Spirit World, the team had to create many of the demons from scratch. And the battles between humans and demons were among the most difficult to recreate visually from the manga, especially the scenes with the Toguro Brothers—the Elder Toguro can distort his body and the Younger Toguro can expand his muscles.

“The body size of the actors and the characters are different, so it was really hard to change the scale. It wasn’t just a matter of changing their height, we needed to ensure that the sight lines of the opponents were accurate,” said visual effects advisor Ryo Sakaguchi, who was the first Japanese visual producer to win a Scientific and Technical Award at the Oscars. The team ended up creating and printing 3D models of the Toguro Brothers, and attaching them to the actors for the shoot, so that it was easier and more natural for those acting opposite them.

Moreover, as many of the actors were not used to working with CGI during shoots, the production team came up with various ideas to help the actors perform, including having a stunt person wear blue clothes and fight opposite the actor.

“How do actors imagine an enemy that isn’t actually in front of them?” asked action director Takahito Ouchi. “No matter how much you tell them that an enemy is there, they need to get fired up enough to make it seem like they are really fighting. And that realism is born from the passion of the actors.”

The fate of the Human World lies in Yusuke’s hands. In an effort for survival, the remaining residents decided to band together to create a unified community while facing the challenge of outsiders trying to go in.

The large-scale threat of Concrete Utopia creates an opening to explore the nuances of humanity up to its basics. The residents of our central apartment had to create a new government for their community, and food had to be something that needed to be found, not bought. These small details bring to light a great detail that in the face of loss, humans must go back to their most essential fragments to make them complete again.

Photo from Columbia Pictures

The film confidently discusses this, and the director Um Tae-hwa has a firm understanding of why making a disaster epic requires going back to the roots of being human. It’s almost imperative to magnify your characters from the ground up before being blindsided by what’s happening around them.

Thankfully, Concrete Utopia has a solid cast to support this. Lee Byung-hun stars as the leader of the apartment building, and his dark turn halfway through the movie creates an effective shocker. Park Bo-young and Park Seo-Joon were also great as a married couple who learned the unsettling intricacies of their neighborhood.

It’s easy to endorse Concrete Utopia as a satire disguised as a genre film, but seeing it unravel as such throughout the viewing was a great experience. As South Korea’s Best International Feature Film submission to the upcoming Oscars 2024, the film is very inclusive in the themes it delves into. I’m already expecting this as an audience favorite when it comes out.

Concrete Utopia is now showing in cinemas nationwide from Columbia Pictures Philippines.Matthew Escosiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805192838835673543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162367966255541501.post-57047861526074118922023-09-10T23:56:00.002-07:002023-09-10T23:56:20.166-07:00US box office hit ‘Sound of Freedom’ and South Korean dark-comedy ‘Cobweb’ is coming soon to Philippine cinemas

TBA Studios is excited to announce its upcoming line-up of films for the rest of the year. The film features a stellar cast led by Jim Caviezel and Mira Sorvino, as well as Bill Camp, John Rhys-Davies, and Michael Roark. The film was written and directed by Alejandro Monteverde. Chaos ensues when a web of complications starts to rise on the film set. It stars Song Kang-ho, best known for his award-winning and critically acclaimed performance in 2019’s Parasite. The supporting cast features some of the most recognizable faces in South Korean entertainment, including Lim Soo-jung (A Tale Of Two Sisters), Oh Jung-se (It’s Okay Not To Be Okay), Jeon Yeo-been (Vincenzo), Jang Young-nam (It’s Okay Not To Be Okay), and Krystal Jung (famously of the K-pop girl group f(x) and romcom movie Sweet & Sour). The film was written and directed by Kim Jee-woon, whose previous works include A Tale Of Two Sisters (2003), A Bittersweet Life (2005), and The Good, The Bad, The Weird (2008). Barunson E&A, the same studio behind Parasite, is the producer and the global distributor of the film.

Both films will be exclusively distributed locally through TBA Studios. (Alessandra De Rossi), a newlywed couple on a honeymoon getaway on a remote
island. When a typhoon strikes that leaves them stranded in their destination
house, past and present problems emerge.

It can be a challenge to get through What If? if you’re
looking for a casual watch on Netflix. The film takes its time to make you
believe that Jecs and Billie’s vacation will be dreamy and unproblematic. The
two are on a high from their fresh marriage that dealbreakers may be out of the
way in their conversations.

But the film also did not waste any time in establishing
inevitable confrontations, immediately turning the once joyful couple into
insufferable individuals who are just waiting for the opportunity to hide their
biggest gripes for each other. It is a struggle to watch because you know that
their marriage is already in doom only a few days in.

It is commendable that What If? did not shy away from
showing the toxicity of its characters. At times, it works to the advantage of
its actors to shy away from having cookie-cutter performances. Both De Guzman
and De Rossi are great as they always do, and if there is any reason to watch
the film, it’s them.

The “what if” posed by the film’s title was never really
assumed until the very end. With problems acknowledged and discussed, the most
striking what-if is the future that holds between Jecs and Billie. Where we are
left off puts them in a critical condition. Major arguments are resolved with
band-aid solutions, and our characters will undoubtedly face another crisis
before they know it. I’m most looking forward to seeing what comes after.

What If? is now streaming on Netflix.
Matthew Escosiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805192838835673543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162367966255541501.post-34931213335523756932023-08-18T05:40:00.006-07:002023-08-18T05:40:51.296-07:00 Sparks Fly in Puregold Channel's newest Tiktok series, My Plantito

Brace yourselves for a rollercoaster ride of laughter, kilig, and heartwarming moments when Puregold Channel's latest Tiktok series, My Plantito, premieres on August 23.

The story begins when a quiet, seemingly aloof and shy guy who treats his plants like family meets a bubbly vlogger-next-door who takes an instant liking for him. Get ready as Puregold Channel, the ‘enabler’ behind those romcom series you loved, gets you on board a journey through friendship, family ties, and a dash of romance.

My Plantito, the first-ever Boy-Love (BL) series on Tiktok, is set to be Puregold Channel’s next hit production, and it's not hard to see why. The show gives viewers a peek into how a casual encounter between two quirky characters can lead to a deep connection when the timing is right and love is meant to be.

The show stars Kych Minemoto as Charlie the vlogger and Michael Ver as the handsome plantito, both of whom prove that love is not just about attraction and giddy romance—it's about self-discovery, navigating the issues of inclusivity and acceptance, and unraveling the kind of love that yearns to be free.

Ivy Hayagan-Piedad, Marketing Senior Manager at Puregold, concurs, asserting that My Plantito “is more than just garden-variety entertainment; it's learning about understanding and empathy. It isn't just any love story; it proffers meaningful life lessons and the endearing mess that love creates.”

As in their past digital series, director Lemuel Lorca and producer Chris Cahilig weave their magic behind the scenes. In the full-length category, a grant worth P2,500,000 each will be awarded to five select directors. Meanwhile, in the short film category, 25 grants worth P100,000 each will be given to aspiring student directors.

“Puregold has always believed in upholding education and supporting the talents of Filipino youth,” says Puregold President, Vincent Co. “We endeavor to give young people a more sustainable, energizing environment in which they may pursue their passions. This is the driving force behind our latest initiative, the CinePanalo Film Festival.”

Interested participants in both categories must submit the following: a duly accomplished entry form, a synopsis not longer than 300 words, a detailed sequence treatment, a resume of the director with links to sample works (if any), and a digital copy of the director’s profile photo. Interested participants may email thesecretariat@cinepanalo.com to receive the materials necessary to apply for the grant. All applications must be emailed back on or before October 27, 2023.

Puregold’s Senior Manager for Marketing, Ivy Piedad, says that the production grants may be what budding creatives need to kick-start their career in the film industry. “We will provide resources that every young filmmaker dreams of: the financial means to practice one’s craft and a screening in major cinemas as well as online. These tools will help spark their creativity and lead to a priceless first-hand education on producing high-quality content.”

Piedad stresses on the importance of advocating for the work of young student filmmakers in the short film category. “We want to reach out to fresh new talent that will help define the industry, and potentially spur Puregold’s retailtainment initiatives in the years to come,” she points out. “That’s why our short film category is open to students and campus-based filmmakers looking for their big break. We’ve also partnered with several schools in the country to reach out to the next generation of filmmakers.”

Award-winning filmmaker Chris Cahilig, CinePanalo festival director, speaks on what distinguishes it from other similar events, both foreign and local: “Unlike other film festivals, we will focus on films that inspire and uplift, crafted by Filipino filmmakers who want to share their talents with their peers.”

Each participant in the CinePanalo Film Festival must submit their fully produced film on or before March 1, 2024. All final submissions in the short film category must have a minimum runtime of 20 minutes and a maximum runtime of 30 minutes. All feature film submissions must be at least 90 minutes long.

All completed film entries will be screened during the festival period from March 8 to 10, 2024, at the Gateway Cinemas in Quezon City.

Fully produced short film entries will be uploaded to the official Puregold Channel on YouTube, where these will join the company’s other digital retailtainment properties such as “GV Boys,” “Ang Babae sa Likod ng Face Mask,” “52 Weeks,” and “Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile”.

The CinePanalo Film Festival marks Puregold’s latest foray into integrating its sustainability and retailtainment efforts. Such an approach has allowed Puregold to reach out to the next generation of shoppers who are rediscovering the joys of heartwarming Filipino culture and stories.

Be a part of this historic festival.
