Today's audience would associate Jerrold Tarog with his big-budget Filipino films such as 'Heneral Luna' and most recently 'Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral.'

A man of ambition, some of his greatest works can be found on his short films, evoking powerful messages using dialogues. It is very ironic to note how his earlier training as a film scorer to Brillante Mendoza’s works alludes to his rhythmic sequencing of words.

This is one of the reasons why some of the most memorable scenes of ‘Luna’ or ‘Goyo’ did not came from the large-scale battle sequences, but the duel of word play among its characters. One of Tarog’s first directorial effort, the short film ‘Carpool’ (2006) is essentially a frenetic spin on betrayal on friendship and love, and it just so happens to be set on a small space of a car.

Tarog’s short films are mostly extensions of key elements of his works. ‘Astig’ (2008) is a spin-off of the mockumentary ‘Confessional,’ his first feature film.

Faculty’ is one of his more memorable works, which asks the limitations of a teacher’s principles and responsibilities over their students. The film is an entry to ANC’s AmBisyon in 2010. It also ties in with Tarog’s high school film ‘Senior Year.’

Eksena Sa Gubat’ (2011) is unavailable for public, but it is said to be a spin-off of the award-winning Cinemalaya film ‘Sana Dati.’ The same goes to his ‘Ulam,’ which is part of the horror anthology ‘Shake, Rattle & Roll XV’ (2015).

Agusan Marsh Diaries’ (2012) is a 45 minute documentary about him and his team’s journey to the overlooked Agusan Marsh Wildwife Sanctuary. It is a collaborative project with Butuan Global Forum and TaosPuso Foundation.

His most recent short film, ‘Angelito,’ (2018) serves as a prelude to ‘Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral’ and is set immediately after the events of ‘Heneral Luna.’
