Jonathan Zawada's cinematic rendition of “Tall Tales,” Thom Yorke and Mark Pritchard's debut collaborative album, will be shown exclusively in selected New Zealand cinemas this 8 May 2025.
The album has been in development for a decade, utilizing synth with emerging sound technologies. It’s an exciting feat for Thom Yorke, who keeps challenging the dynamics of his music. And while the album doesn’t evoke the style he’s best known for, there’s a great marriage of Yorke’s restlessness and Pritchard’s free-spirited nature in “Tall Tales” that is commendable and worth the listen.
Zawada’s film played out the entirety of the album with visuals to support each track. It turns the electronic music compilation into what the filmmaker described as a “fairy tale for the modern world”. To create this, Zawada used artificial intelligence to interpret the idiosyncrasies of “Tall Tales” the album – a method that may be divisive but serves well within the context of how the music was created.
“Tall Tales” is worth a look. Fans of Thom Yorke and Mark Pritchard will find something very familiar yet innovative with this first collaborative effort. The film is a great complement if you’re eyeing the best way to experience this album for the first time.
