Review: “Sketch” is the family movie you should not miss

Here’s a quaint little film about a young girl who accidentally brings to life her notebook full of monster drawings, not knowing the havoc it can cause in her town.

On paper, “Sketch” appears to be a great fairy tale. There is a pond that magically made these living monsters possible. The girl and her brother are working together to defeat them by drawing their own creative weapons. They may or may not win in the end, but they were able to learn the big, valuable lessons of bravery and camaraderie.

The film gets fantastical for the most part, but at its core, it is a story of a family in grief. After their mother passed away, the young girl used her love for creating art as an outlet to express her frustration. “Sketch” never loses sight of these painful woes and realizations that come along with being a child filled with large emotions. I can’t help but recall the familial touches of Steven Spielberg’s earlier works when the film merges ambitious set pieces with tender scenes.

“Sketch” is modestly made with a three-million USD budget, and it feels more expensive than many American films produced with a far more expensive budget. It’s a family movie you should not miss.

"Sketch” is now showing in New Zealand cinemas.
