"Toy Story 5" review: More than child's play

Toy Story 5 still

In Toy Story 5, Woody, Jessie, Buzz, and the rest of Bonnie's toys are confronted with the threat of screen time, as Bonnie gets a new tablet device named Lilypad.

As Bonnie grew older, playing with toys felt like an activity she shouldn't do anymore. Kids her age were leaning towards digital gadgets to socialise and make new friends. Now, it is up to the toys to save themselves from new technology before it is too late.

On the surface, this franchise seems to have exhausted its messaging on playtime and childhood innocence — but Toy Story 5 proves there is still room to explore.

What is welcoming about this film is that while it is targeted at younger audiences, it has far more to say about being a parent in the digital age. How do we ensure our kids continue to experience real, genuine interactions when technology is doing it for us?

The result is a striking film about coexistence in an age where everything changes too fast.

“Toy Story 5” is still emotionally affecting, and Jessie is such a great anchor leading this film. It's an enjoyable watch, though personally, I think it could use a little more of those green aliens (“the claaaaaw”).

Toy Story 5 gets  ★★★⯪☆.
