“Final Destination: Bloodlines” review: death as a punchline

Final Destination Bloodlines still

In “Final Destination: Bloodlines”, the death curse is familial.

More than fifty years ago, Iris Campbell (Brec Bassinger) saved herself and others from impending death after receiving a premonition of a lethal accident happening in the same building. Lives were spared, but death finds a way for vengeance by targeting her family in present time. Her granddaughter Stefani (Kaitlyn Santa Juana) will go on a path to evade this threat and break the cycle of death before it gets to her loved ones.

The “Final Destination” franchise has been transfixed over the logic that death is an inescapable force. You can run from it, but it will eventually catch you in the least expected time. “Bloodlines” follows the same trap for its characters, with the idea that the oldest in the family tree gets to go first down to the youngest.

It is a silly premise, to the extent that the characters know there must be a formula somewhere to evade it. The film gets entertaining when it doesn’t take itself seriously. The death itself operates as a punchline to a joke.

I’m not particularly fond of the entire thing, but I appreciate how it still makes an effort to be different from its predecessors. Being campy, which “Bloodlines” turned out to be, is what’s needed from this franchise. As evident from its grisly yet hilarious deaths in the form of a malfunctioning MRI machine to a coin that prompted a train crash, the film realized that this franchise only needs to make fun of how it destroyed the laws of physics to work.

“Final Destination: Bloodlines” is now showing in cinemas.
