Michael Shanks’ “Together” follows Tim (Dave Franco) and Millie (Alison Brie), a couple who moved out of town with hopes to strengthen their relationship. During a day hike, they stumbled upon a mysterious cave that carried a supernatural energy that could potentially alter their love and physicality.

Without revealing the big surprise, when I say physicality, I mean their flesh becomes bound by the need for co-dependency.

“Together” observes the tension of a doomed-to-fail relationship through the lens of body horror. Tim is suffering from past traumas involving his parents, which greatly affect how he perceives his relationship with his girlfriend, Millie. They have been together for a decade, and the only anchor of their love is a woman who would take the bare minimum to make it work.

It took a supernatural force to make them realize the good and bad elements of their connection. The film smartly acknowledges these highs and lows during moments when the couple is at their worst physical state. After a gruesome scene that involved Tim, Millie, and a saw, the two reflect on what they just did and reaffirm that the love is still there between them. The irony of having one of the most romantic moments to ever happen in this couple, only moments after inducing violence in each other, is a neat touch for Shanks to include.

By the end, “Together” rests its case that co-dependency can only be beneficial when each molecule of one’s body is merged with another. It is kind of romantic when you think about it, especially after spending two hours with two people in a relationship, unknowingly killing each other with their best and worst attributes.

“Together” is showing in New Zealand cinemas this 31 July 2025 from Kismet Movies.
