I have to applaud “Him”, directed by Justin Tipping and produced by Jordan Peele, for never shying away from the confines of the story it wants to tell.
It’s a story of a rookie athlete who signed up for a week-long training session with his idol veteran. As each day goes by, his training becomes more rigid to the verge of danger.
“Him” touches on how idols create worrying repercussions for both fans and themselves. The concept of being the G.O.A.T. or the greatest of all time (weirdly represented by an actual goat in this film) puts a toll on these people that only serve a higher council with self-interests.
But this thesis isn’t depicted subtly enough as the film, clearly designed to cater to a younger, TikTok-frenzied generation of horror audience, made things too flashy or on-the-nose that only hurt instead of impressing me.
Tyriq Withers as the rookie and Marlon Wayans as his veteran trainer are fine and serviceable, but at times, they appear to be over-the-top with what was given to them.
“Him” has a lot of imagination, and I’ll give them that. But by the end of it, it struggles to keep up with its ambitions. Does it want to be a glorified music video or a high-intensity horror film set in the dynamic world of sports? It is confusing.
“Him” is now showing in cinemas nationwide.
