“Keeper” review: Ozgood Perkins misses the streak

Ozgood Perkins’ second directorial effort this 2025, “Keeper”, finds the filmmaker on a continuous journey in polishing his own creative voice.

Here, Perkins combines the restrained nature of “Longlegs” with some of the all-out energy of “The Monkey”. Where he finds the in-between from all of this is what he seems to struggle with in this new film.

“Keeper” stars Tatiana Maslany as Liz, an artist who traveled to a remote cabin with his partner Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland). Mysterious apparitions and forces unexpectedly emerge, stemming from decades of history in this secluded area.

I love the opening of “Keeper”, as well as touches of small sequences spread throughout the film, but it could easily be tighter than what it laid out. Honestly, it felt like a first full-length feature, which is sad considering the quality of what Perkins has already made.

If you’re looking for an eerie flick in the multiplex that’s free from popular IP associations, I couldn’t recommend this movie enough. It might not be as strong as Perkins’ recent works, but what you will be getting here is a completely original vision from a creative force that’s successfully churning out films outside the franchise bubble.

“Keeper” is now showing in New Zealand cinemas.
