"Supergirl" review: Milly Alcock soars in average DC superhero flick

"Supergirl" expands the world of the DC Cinematic Universe, but it feels inconsequential.

When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.

As the second feature film in James Gunn and Peter Safran's revamped DC, most of "Supergirl" felt like it's abandoning a lot of potential. The world-building is interesting: a Mad Max-meets-Guardians of the Galaxy mash-up where otherworldly beings fool around in the margins of civilisation, and space criminals get away with just about anything.

It's the perfect environment for Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El, who's trying to find her place in the vast galaxy after witnessing her home world be destroyed. Her character exists in a state of grief, one that pushes her to stand up to others one moment, and act recklessly the next. It's a compelling inner contradiction, and the film is at its best when it leans into that tension rather than rushing past it.

Milly is the saving grace of "Supergirl", and that's because everything else in the film simply can't catch up with her talent. She brings a raw, grounded intensity to Kara, elevating scenes that might otherwise fall flat and making you wish the material around her was as good as her performance.

What I wish is that this film had a bigger feminist perspective, and it could definitely benefit more from a female director leading the charge. Craig Gillespie is competent, as evident in previous works like "I, Tonya", but this feels like another rendition of a James Gunn-style flick. A more original and distinctly feminine vision will make this soar. Overall, "Supergirl" has plenty of imagination, but nothing particularly insightful to share with most of it.

"Supergirl" gets ★★★☆☆.
