In “Toy Story 5”, Woody, Jessie, Buzz, and the rest of Bonnie's toys are confronted with the threat of screentime, as Bonnie gets a new tablet device named Lilypad.
Can the toys truly save themselves from digital gadgets?
On the surface, this franchise seems to have exhausted its messaging on playtime and childhood innocence — but “Toy Story 5” proves there's still room to explore.
What's welcoming about this film is that while it's targeted at younger audiences, it has far more to say about being a parent in the digital age. How do we ensure our kids continue to experience real, genuine interactions when tech is doing it for us?
The result is a striking film about coexistence in an age where everything changes too fast.
“Toy Story 5” is still emotionally affecting, and Jessie is such a great anchor leading this film. It's an enjoyable watch, though personally, I think it could use a little more of those green aliens (“the claaaaaw”).
Toy Story 5 gets ★★★⯪☆.
