"Cabaret - The Musical at the Kit Kat Club", one of musical theatre's most enduring works, is coming to Auckland this spring from 22 September to 18 October 2026 at the ASB Waterfront Theatre.
Presented by Auckland Theatre Company and Auckland Live, the production is a celebration of two milestones: the 60th anniversary of the iconic musical and the 10th anniversary of the ASB Waterfront Theatre.
Berlin, 1929. The Jazz Age is fading, and at the infamous Kit Kat Club, the city's glorious misfits gather for one last night of celebration, excess, and hedonism. Sally Bowles lives for the moment in a bohemian, gin-soaked dream. But beyond the club's walls, the world is beginning to close in. Winner of eight Tony Awards and celebrated in landmark productions across Broadway and the West End, Cabaret remains as thrilling, seductive, and relevant as ever.
Leading the cast is Nomi Cohen (Chicago, & Juliet) as Sally Bowles, the role made iconic by Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film, alongside Matu Ngaropo (Ngāi Tūhoe, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Porou) (& Juliet, The Lion King, Hamilton) as the mercurial Emcee. The cast is completed by Susan Brady as Fräulein Schneider, Jonathan Martin as Ernst Ludwig, Hillary Moulder as Fräulein Kost, Steven Ray as Herr Schultz, and Justin Rogers as Clifford Bradshaw, supported by an ensemble of ten Kit Kat Club performers and live musicians.
The creative team is equally impressive. Director Benjamin Kilby-Henson leads the production, with musical direction by Robin Kelly and choreography by Kira Josephson, whose movement language draws on extensive research into 1930s dance styles and the legacy of Bob Fosse. Set and costume designer Dan Williams transforms the ASB Waterfront Theatre stage into a world of art deco glamour, tension, and spectacle, inspired by Berlin's legendary Eldorado nightclub.
ATC Artistic Director Jonathan Bielski describes Cabaret as "a cautionary tale, a warning to all subsequent generations of the slow creep of fascism and its terrible consequences," adding that its brilliance lies in the way musical theatre is used to both entertain and provoke.
"Cabaret - The Musical at the Kit Kat Club" is an Auckland Theatre Company and Auckland Live production, proudly supported by Auckland Council Events, with MiNDFOOD as presenting partner.
