Review: “Evil Dead Burn” delivers on the bonkers body horror carnage

Evil Dead Burn still

After losing her husband in a car accident, a grieving woman (Souheila Yacoub) seeks solace with her in-laws at their family home secluded in the woods. What could've been a time for mourning became a bloodbath after Deadites, a demonic entity, invaded the family one by one to kill them in search of a powerful ancient weapon.

What sets the Evil Dead franchise apart from other long-running horror series is its steadiness, and Sébastien Vaniček keeps that going here. The horror remains confined to tight domestic spaces, with the Deadites crawling and jumping in every corner while the surviving humans scramble to find a household item to turn into a weapon. There is still a small-budget approach in spirit running through the film, in the same scrappy, practical make-up and production-design-heavy tradition Sam Raimi built the franchise on back in 1981 with the first "Evil Dead."

Evil Dead Burn still

"Evil Dead Burn" continues the franchise's tradition of being gory, fun, and downright funny, balancing genuine scares with the kind of dark humour that has always been part of the Evil Dead identity. That balance does take a while to kick in. There is a first act that drags on a bit too long, spending more time than it needs to before letting the horror take over. Once it does, though, it feels like a Christmas gift finally being unwrapped, and the film settles into the rhythm fans of the series will recognise: chaotic, gruesome, and never quite taking itself too seriously.

The set pieces are enjoyable, delivering the bonkers body horror carnage the franchise is known for, though they are not quite on par with what fans expect from this franchise at its best. "Evil Dead Burn" might land on the weaker end of the series when measured against its predecessors, but there is still plenty here for audiences to have a blast with.

"Evil Dead Burn” gets ★★★⯪☆.
