Judith Burton (Hannah Waddingham) tells her friends that she is a forensic accountant, living a quiet life with her close social circle — except she's not. For decades, Judith has been living a double life as an international assassin.
"Ride or Die" opens with Judith on a mission at an Alpine ski resort. After a shootout and an extensive chase, she finds the nearest bar to slip back into the person everyone knows her to be. Judith likes to date in the places she visits and attend book club sessions with her best friend Debbie Claybourne (Octavia Spencer).
Judith's decades-long secret is revealed when, during a mission gone wrong, Debbie learns that her best friend of twenty years isn't just an accountant, but someone dangerous and cunning. This revelation sets off an action-packed series that puts Judith and Debbie's friendship to the ultimate test.
Stand-up comedian Tessa Coates is the writer and showrunner of this crowd-pleasing eight-episode series on Prime Video. Throughout the series, Coates puts Judith and Debbie in conflicts that are both engaging and hilarious. At times, the two leads have a switcheroo, with the clueless Debbie stepping up as the action hero to rescue her friend.
"Ride or Die" also comments on the anxieties and absurd assumptions that come with being women of a certain age, hilariously realised by Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer's performances. The two actresses are a joy together onscreen, with great chemistry throughout. Waddingham is a standout, and one can only expect her to land another action project soon after this.
"Ride or Die" has a solid first episode, and while the rest of the show isn't as strong, there are plenty of laughs and fun to be found here.
