In "Practical Magic 2", Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock) and her sister Gillian (Nicole Kidman) try to break the centuries-old family curse after it strikes Sally's family once again.
"Practical Magic 2" is the movie equivalent of an epilogue of a novel that doesn't need one. Reading it is optional, but for the sake of closure, you just had to flip through the pages and get over it.
The only difference is that plenty of time has passed since "Practical Magic" came out. It's been 28 years since the first movie premiered in cinemas. I'm not entirely sure if there's enough clamour to warrant a multi-million-dollar production for a follow-up to this story that became a cult classic over the years, but this movie delivered a feeling that's rare in legacy sequels.
For one, it felt like a movie from 1998. It is incredibly soft, cosy and blinded by its flaws, the very things that made the original watchable up to this day. "Practical Magic 2" isn't nearly as good as its predecessor, but the feeling and nostalgia are ever so present while watching it.
The core female cast of the first movie is present here, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman being serviceable at best, outshining their young co-stars Joey King and Maisie Williams. The surprise in the sequel is the return of Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, the Owens sisters' aunties, both memorable in their limited screen time.
Is "Practical Magic 2" worth the watch after all these years? If you're sentimental over these things, then I'll definitely recommend it. I'm coming from a less enthusiastic affinity for this title, so I'm sure its intended audience will have something meatier to say.
