I recall going to Hamilton Gardens for the first time and being amazed by how singular and timeless it was.
Walk to your left, and it’s a garden inspired by 16th-century Japan. Lean a bit, you’re in Egypt. A new documentary about this New Zealand institution is being released this week in cinemas nationwide, dedicated to the patrons who have adored it over the years and tourists who are curious about the creative insight that goes behind the garden. The title is “The Time Traveller’s Guide to Hamilton Gardens”, directed by Grant Sheehan, whose multiple visits to this place led him to publish a book of the same name and eventually produce the film version.
“The Time Traveller’s Guide to Hamilton Gardens” provides fascinating interviews with the team behind it and amazing footage of the garden from different perspectives. The documentary certainly looks majestic on the big screen. It's the best way to experience it, other than maybe seeing it inside Hamilton Gardens, should they include it as part of a future tour.
You can check the full list of cinemas showing “The Time Traveller’s Guide to Hamilton Gardens” on Limelight Distribution’s website here.
