What happens when one of the biggest popstars in the world steals your song?
"Power Ballad" invites us to question what defines song ownership. Is it the few words plucked together to make a chorus? The hums that complete a tune? Or the performer who made an entirely different meaning from it?
Paul Rudd plays Rick Power, a musician who gave up his dreams in America to settle into a simple life with his family in Ireland and become a wedding singer. One gig led him to meet Danny Wilson, played by Nick Jonas, the world-famous pop star in search of his next breakthrough. Plot ensues when Rick learns one of his original compositions became Danny's big hit song without his permission.
"Power Ballad" reaffirms the importance of independent artists and why we need to uplift their works. The film is directed by John Carney of "Once" and "Sing Street", who continues his quest to tell the story of underdog musicians trying to make their voice heard. "Power Ballad" is tonally his most accessible work yet, combining quick humour with relatable narratives about the everyday middle-class.
Rick Power is the best role Paul Rudd has done. His familial warmth and signature chaotic rage are put to great use. He is very good here. Nick Jonas strongly complements Rudd's energy throughout the film.
"Power Ballad" is an easy charmer. The film could do with better resolutions for its characters, but it is just a pleasant film from beginning to end.
"Power Ballad" gets ★★★★☆.
