Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (Film Review)

Nov 10, 2012
I swear if the world would actually end, I will find Keira Knightley no matter what.
An asteroid named "Matilda" is crashing into Earth and three weeks in time the world is coming into an end. Dodge, an insurance worker, finds himself lonely until his wife left him. Deciding to reunite with his high school sweetheart, Doug met Penny, who just ended relationship with her boyfriend. When the time is ticking, Doug and Penny set on a trip to do whatever they want to do before it runs out.

When you thought of an apocalyptic movie, what you expect would become an alien invasion, earthquake or a war movie. In this Lorene Scafaria's directorial debut, she gives a little bit of twist and turns in it. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is not your stereotypical end-of-the-world movie with guns and explosions, instead what you will get here is an heartwarming, romantic drama. Movies like these was rare and fresh so I decided to see this one for myself.

Whatever what critics are saying, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is a fun-yet-dramatic movie. It is very hilarious but I tell you, if you don't want to be disappointed, don't watch the trailer because almost half of the jokes used in the film are in the trailer. Is it predictable, yes. And what I found interesting about this one is you either choose whether the ending is tragic or happy. Frankly, because everyone dies at the end, well that made sense because it is an end-of-the-world movie. It isn't like 2012 wherein some of the people were survived or lived at the end.

Performances by the actors in this film were great. Steve Carell did a really good job portraying the role of Doug. Keira Knightley also did a great job. The chemistry between Carell and Knightley worked surprisingly, well not in a romantic type of way. Martin Sheen is also in this one. I thought his character wasn't necessary, but he did fine.

The third and final act of this movie was depressing. It was very sad and you almost felt connected with the characters. I liked the fact that they're switching tones in each act. For example, the first act opens very comedic. The second one being a romance. And the final act being a drama. The movie was presented very realistic and works very well for this film.

Performances were great. Soundtrack was awesome. This film is fresh but turned out to be predictable.

'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World' is a fresh take to the end-of-the-world genre. Though it felt very predictable, the performances by the cast made it a little less intriguing and dramatic.

The geek rates it 7/10.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is now showing exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (TriNoma, Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3).
