My Predictions for Oscars 2013

Feb 20, 2013

It's never too late to give my predictions for the much-awaited 85th Academy Awards. And since a lot of you are requesting, here's my predictions for the Oscars 2013. But before doing so, i'm not giving my prediction for minor categories like Best Documentary or Best Animated Short Film. I haven't seen most of the Best Picture contenders so here goes. Oh and by the way, the bold word caps are my picks in case you'll be confused.

BEST PICTURE

  • Amour
  • Argo - this film is my favorite film of 2012. And probably the top contender amongst the other categories due to countless awards it getting. If this film doesn't win any Oscar, i'll probably commit suicide.
  • Beasts of the Southern Wild
  • Django Unchained
  • Les Miserables
  • Life of Pi
  • Lincoln
  • Silver Linings Playbook
  • Zero Dark Thirty

BEST ACTOR

  • Bradley Cooper, “Silver Linings Playbook”
  • Daniel Day-Lewis, “Lincoln” - Even though I haven't seen Lincoln, there's a big possibility DDL might win Best Actor. C'mon Oscars, you have to give this guy another shot, he looks amazing in the movie.
  • Denzel Washington, “Flight”
  • Hugh Jackman, “Les Miserables”
  • Joaquin Phoenix, "The Master"

BEST ACTRESS

  • Emmanuelle Riva, “Amour”
  • Jennifer Lawrence, “Silver Linings Playbook” - 2012 is a busy year for Jennifer Lawrence. You got her The Hunger Games to SLP. From the actresses nominated in the category, she stood out to be the best of them.
  • Jessica Chastain, “Zero Dark Thirty”
  • Naomi Watts, “The Impossible”
  • Quvenzhane Wallis, “Beasts of the Southern Wild”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

  • Alan Arkin, “Argo”
  • Christoph Waltz, “Django Unchained”
  • Philip Seymour Hoffman, “The Master” - Based from the footage I saw for this movie, Philip Seymour Hoffman definitely brings the heat to the next level in The Master. He is good in every movie he made so hopefully a second Oscar for this guy. PS: I'll probably choose Leo DiCaprio if he's even nominated.
  • Robert De Niro, “Silver Linings Playbook”
  • Tommy Lee Jones, “Lincoln”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

  • Amy Adams, “The Master”
  • Anne Hathaway, “Les Miserables” - it's not a big shocker if Ms. Hathaway bags the award for  this category. A predictable choice anyways.
  • Sally Field, “Lincoln”
  • Helen Hunt, “The Sessions”
  • Jacki Weaver, “Silver Linings Playbook”

BEST DIRECTOR

  • Ang Lee, "Life of Pi"
  • David O. Russell, “Silver Linings Playbook”
  • Behn Zeitlin, "Beast of the Southern Wild"
  • Michael Haneke, “Amour”
  • Steven Spielberg, “Lincoln” - Spielberg is a brilliant director. He hasn't made a single bad film, or even something to disappoint his fans. He's a visionary filmmaker and Lincoln alone made me admire him even more.
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

  • “Amour”
  • “Django Unchained” - C'mon Academy. You didn't nominate Tarantino for Best Director. You've gotta give him the freaking award for Best Original Screenplay.
  • “Flight”
  • “Moonrise Kingdom”
  • “Zero Dark Thirty”

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

  • “Argo”
  • “Beasts of the Southern Wild”
  • “Life of Pi”
  • “Lincoln” - I'm  not picking Argo this time. The screenplay for Lincoln is amazing. I read pages of the script and amazed by it. It might go to Silver Linings Playbook or freakin' Life of Pi, but my bet still goes out to this film.
  • “Silver Linings Playbook”

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

  • “Brave”
  • “Frankenweenie”
  • “ParaNorman”
  • “The Pirates! Band of Misfits”
  • “Wreck-It Ralph” - I haven't got the chance to review it because I see it late, Wreck-It Ralph is one of the most entertaining animated movie ever. For a big retro gamer like me, it's a shame if Academy lets to hold the award for Brave.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

  • Amour” - I haven't seen this one yet. But it's nominated for Best Picture, everyone's bets are going on for this film.
  • “A Royal Affair”
  • “No”
  • “Kon-Tiki”
  • “War Witch”

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

  • “Anna Karenina"
  • “Django Unchained”
  • “Life of Pi”
  • “Lincoln”
  • “Skyfall” - Roger Deakin's work in Skyfall is beautiful. Every frame means a lot to the film and while the franchise celebrating 50 years, an Oscar will be the best tribute they can pull out.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

  • “Anna Karenina”
  • “Les Miserables” - Do I still need to elaborate why this needs to win?
  • “Lincoln”
  • “Mirror Mirror”
  • “Snow White and the Huntsman”

BEST FILM EDITING

  • “Argo” - the editing for this film is what fascinates me and the reason why I loved Argo. It keeps you glued to the screen and started to care for the story itself. Same as last year's Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Argo is a standout among the other nominees when it comes to editing.
  • “Life of Pi
  • “Lincoln”
  • “Silver Linings Playbook”
  • “Zero Dark Thirty”

BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING

  • “Hitchcock”
  • “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” - Even though it features more CGI characters compared to its predecessor, The Hobbit still delivers great makeup and hairstyle design, noticeably the look of the 13 Dwarves.
  • “Les Miserables”

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

  • “Before My Time” from "Chasing Ice"
  • “Everybody Needs a Best Friend” from "Ted"
  • “Pi's Lullaby” from "Life of Pi"
  • “Skyfall” from "Skyfall" - It's gotta be Adele's Skyfall. It's the best Bond theme song to date and the better song among the bunch.
  • “Suddenly” from "Les Miserables"

BEST SOUND EDITING

  • “Argo”
  • “Django Unchained”
  • “Life of Pi”
  • “Skyfall”
  • “Zero Dark Thirty”

BEST SOUND MIXING

  • “Argo”
  • “Les Miserables"
  • “Life of Pi”
  • “Lincoln”
  • “Skyfall"

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

  • “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”
  • “Life of Pi”
  • “Marvel's The Avengers”
  • “Prometheus”
  • “Snow White and the Huntsman”

So, that wraps up my predictions for the Academy Awards. It's a tough year to predict the films actually. You got Argo, Lincoln and Django all clashing into one award show. Who will win? Who will bag the golden statues? Tune in Monday, Feb.  25 (Philippine Time) to find out.
