As to how Director Randolph Longjas orchestrated the performances of actors Paolo Pingol and Jadford Dilanco possessing Down Syndrome in real-life is one of the biggest mysteries of 'Star Na Si Van Damme Stallone'. Pingol and Dilanco played Down syndrome patient Van Damme Stallone in the character's different life phases. He is raised by a single mother (Candy Pangilinan) who promises him to experience the normal life just like the other kids due to his differences.
On its simple premise alone, the movie strays away from the conventional conceptions everyone will be expecting from it, most of it had to do with the fact that the publicity promises a rather jolly story. Those expecting that will definitely surprise many.
Aside from dark scenes featuring a mother almost killing his son out of despair, themes surrounding acceptance and even polygamy was featured to support the story, although a lot of them stretches the film's duration way too much. It finds humor though through times when the supporting characters play along to conceal things up on Van Damme Stallone.
The movie is a real charmer from start to finish. Pingol and Dilanco gave the most organic and endearing performances out of the terrific cast. It's not because the two are real-life Down Syndrome victims, but they fleshed out Van Damme Stallone to an extent wherein he is more of a real-life person than a movie character. Candy Pangilinan who won Best Actress in the recently concluded CineFilipino Film Festival 2016 Awards ceremony, gave a fantastic feat providing emotional punches to the viewer. Child actor Isaac Aguirre was also terrific as Van Damme Stallone's older brother Kuya Tano.
The geek rates it 8/10!
