Review: “Companion” fills in the shoes that “Black Mirror” left behind

Going blindly to writer-director Drew Hancock’s “Companion” is possibly the best way to experience the movie.

I’ve been fortunate to have this under my radar, never having seen any trailer or clips except with the slightest idea that it’s from the creative team behind “The Notebook” (2004) and “Barbarian” (2022). From this alone, I know that it’s a horror movie masquerading as a rom-com.

There are no monsters or otherworldly creatures in “Companion”, only people using technology for their devious plans. Most of the time, it felt like watching “Black Mirror” all over again where the premise isn’t the biggest reveal, but what the characters do with it. Remember “Black Mirror” when it was still great? I feel this is the kind of fun and suspense that it left behind.

And this film is a lot of fun to see unfold. Sophie Thatcher impresses as someone caught in the middle of a framed murder, providing the film’s logical sanity from Jack Quaid’s hilarious role. “Companion” has a great flip-and-switch for its tone. With such a playful premise to tinker with, characters can come up with the dumbest decision in a dangerous situation, and yet still come across as hilarious and thrilling at the same time.

It’s worth noting that “Companion” is based on an original concept by Hancock. The horror genre has been generous lately with these original stories that paid off greatly. I’m confident that “Companion” will see its surge in audiences one day, be it its current theatrical release or at a streaming service. But while it’s still in the cinemas, see it with a big crowd and have fun!

“Companion” is now showing in cinemas nationwide.
