We are now ushering in the new era of DC with DC Studios, under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
A stricter quality control is being implemented this time around. Not only is Gunn directing “Superman”, the first full-length film that introduces the newly minted iteration of this franchise, but he also said that he will be taking quality and readiness as the indicators before announcing any project to move forward. This is a countermeasure of what Marvel Studios has been experiencing now with their ever-expanding universe of films and streaming shows, wherein an increase in quantity only brought them to their inevitable demise.
“Superman” has plenty of things carrying on their plate. Failure to attract audiences could lead to make-or-break situations for the company, especially with the outcome of the DC franchise that came before it. Gunn envisioned this version of Superman to be tonally different, closely rooted in the whimsical nature of the character as a goody-two-shoes superhero, who would try to save every single living being — even a small squirrel — from being squashed by a giant monster.
This Superman might be too good for this world, but he is also living with frustrations as an immigrant living on our planet. He longs to belong, to the point where he’ll easily surrender and own up to his shortcomings when the crowd switches up against him. Fans will undoubtedly compare David Corenswet, the new Superman, with other actors who suited up for the role, but his quirky, less brooding characteristic is what stands out.
Clocked under two hours, “Superman” is a breeze to watch. The film starts in media res, three minutes after Superman had his first defeat in a battle. Having this from the get-go is a nice touch, as the hero is inherently unstoppable so he had to prove his worth throughout the entire film.
Corenswet embodies this Superman who isn’t afraid to lose and be tired, more so ask for help from other superheroes when he wants a breather from a battle. The new Superman is essentially a good guy who deeply loves his people and dog. It’s exciting where James Gunn takes this character in the future, especially other popular comic-book characters in his universe.
“Superman” is now showing in cinemas.
