An entry to the 2025 edition of Metro Manila Film Festival, Raymond Red’s “Manila’s Finest” offers a creeping observation of the Filipino police on the cusp of Martial Law.
The film is set in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Capt. Homer Magtibay (Piolo Pascual) and his partner, Lt. Billy Ojeda (Enrique Gil), were assigned to investigate a series of murders in the slums of Manila.
Their search for truth and justice puts them in an entangled web of illegal gambling, prostitution, and a much larger network of criminals driven by corruption.
“Manila’s Finest” isn’t the thrilling action piece that audiences may expect from a film festival entry being shown nationwide. It’s quite fascinating how it even got here, as it could be the welcoming flavor of Filipino noir our audience needs – the kind that feels urgent without the frantic energy, and one that demands patience and concentration from its restrained nature.
“Manila’s Finest” is now showing in Philippine cinemas as part of the Metro Manila Film Festival.
