Review: “They Will Kill You” lacks soul amidst the abundance of violence

In “They Will Kill You”, Zazie Beetz plays Asia Reaves, who, after being wrongfully sent to prison for more than a decade, is now in search of her estranged sister.

Her sister is employed in the Virgil, a hotel known for housing the richest. Mysteriously and unknown to Asia, getting out of this institution is impossible. Going in is a death trap.

The big reveal of this film is that it delves into the supernatural through an adult-oriented anime in which the protagonist always gets out of the most complex situations, even when the villain is an immortal killing machine. Beetz shows the vulnerability of her character during these sequences. She gets tired and drops down, but will always find her footing in no time.

If handled right, “They Will Kill You” is the type of project that unfolds its movie star into a major movie star status, the same way Uma Thurman rose to the top for starring in Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” films. Beetz has the physicality and charisma in her scenes, but her film unfortunately cannot match what she’s bringing. The film has a talented supporting cast that includes Patricia Arquette, Tom Felton, and Heather Graham, but even they aren’t heightening an underwhelming story.

The film couldn’t properly bring a soul to its stylish canvas. It’s hard to empathize with Asia Reaves and her sister if the film keeps trying to make them look cool. I wasn’t in the right headspace while watching this, but an emotional hook that you could hold on to is essential, and I didn’t get one.

“They Will Kill You” is now showing in cinemas.
